Fish 'n Fins - Dive Sites - Kayangel Atoll


Location: Kayangel Atoll is the northern most island of the Palau archipelago.
Distance from Koror: 64 miles (103 kilometers) from Koror. 2 to 3 hours by speedboat depending on the weather.
Level of Diving Experience: Intermediate to Advanced with at least 50 logged dives and drift diving experience.
Diving Depth Summary: 20 to 150 feet (6 to 46 meters).
Visibility: Varies with the tidal flow.
Currents: Can be very strong depending on location and tide.

General Information: This beautiful atoll is constructed of a main island and 3 sandy cays. The island reefs are seldom dived. About 100 people inhabit the main island; the cays are home to thousands of sea birds.

Reef Formation: Because this island is seldom dived the corals, both hard and soft, are in good condition and found in a profusion of color.

Marine life: Kayangel Atoll abounds with sea life. It is not unusual to see Spinner Dolphins, Manta Rays, Silver and Grey Reef Sharks as well as schooling fish. Sweetlips, snappers, triggerfish and butterflyfish abound on the reef.

Diving: All dives in this location are done from a boat. Divers are cautioned to be aware of the conditions; the currents here are swift and can change direction quickly forcing the diver out toward the open ocean.

Dive sites:
The Blue Hole: On the eastern side of the island, this dive starts at 70 feet (21 meters) and drops down to 150 feet (46 meters) to a break in the reef.

Kayangel Wall: Located on the eastern side of the island, provides a good opportunity to encounter large pelagic fish as well as Silver Tip sharks.

South Channel (also known as Virgin Sacrifice): The channel runs between the southern reef and the atoll. This location usually provides the diver with a thrilling drift dive. Manta rays are often seen here.
